Covers the East Coast from Maine to Florida, plus parts of the Midwest and South. Most populous U.S. time zone.

Central Time

UTC−6 / UTC−5

Runs through the Midwest and Gulf Coast — Chicago, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, and much of Texas and the Plains.

Mountain Time

UTC−7 / UTC−6

Rocky Mountain states that observe daylight saving — Denver, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque. Arizona is listed separately.

Pacific Time

UTC−8 / UTC−7

West Coast time — California, Washington, Oregon (most), and Nevada. Home to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle.

Alaska Time

UTC−9 / UTC−8

Most of Alaska uses Alaska Time. Some Aleutian islands use Hawaii–Aleutian Time instead.

Hawaii–Aleutian Time

UTC−10 year-round

Hawaii stays on Hawaii Standard Time year-round (no daylight saving). Also used in parts of the Aleutian Islands.

Arizona (Mountain Standard)

UTC−7 year-round

Most of Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time year-round and does not observe daylight saving. The Navajo Nation does observe DST.

Atlantic Time (Puerto Rico)

UTC−4 year-round

Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands use Atlantic Standard Time year-round (no daylight saving).

Chamorro Time

UTC+10 year-round

Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands use Chamorro Standard Time year-round (no DST).

Samoa Standard Time

UTC−11 year-round

American Samoa uses Samoa Standard Time year-round (no daylight saving).

How U.S. time zones work

The contiguous United States uses four primary zones — Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific — plus Alaska and Hawaii. Most areas observe daylight saving time; Arizona (mostly) and Hawaii do not. Puerto Rico stays on Atlantic Standard Time year-round.
